Designed to educate the public on Native peoples’ contributions to the U.S. military, “Forward, Together” – Stories from the National Gathering of American Indian Veterans brings together the untold stories of Native veterans, veteran service providers, and tribal leaders.
Native people are historically the highest percentage of any race of people to serve in the U.S. military, with approximately 1 in 4 volunteering for service. The unique challenges they face while and after serving reflect the military’s changing viewpoints and policies when it comes to soldiers’ cultural backgrounds. These interviews were collected at the 2017 National Gathering of American Indian Veterans, hosted by Trickster Art Gallery at Cantigny Park in Wheaton, IL.
